Denmark day 5 – Exploring Copenhagen

Today, we visited the capital. Because the past days have been rather full and busy, we decided to focus on the northern part of the city and more or less stick to the highlights there. We started off this day in a lazy mood and finally arrived in Copenhagen around noon.

After parking the car we first went to Amalienborg Slot, the official residence of the queen. We passed the impressive Marmorkirken with its dome inspired by the St-Peter’s Cathedral in Rome, and the Alexander Newsky Kirke in Byzantine style. Amalienborg Slot itself is a combination of a square, surrounded by 4 almost identical buildings. Although we missed the changing of the guard due to being late, we could see the guards strolling around and presenting arms simultaneously.

Next stop: the Kastellet area. I took like 30 photos of the nice St-Alban’s Church and the Gefion Springvandet fountain. It was cold out here, especially with the strong wind. Fortunately, Febe was nicely installed in her warm and wind-covered buggy. Túrin loves this weather btw…

We then walked to the harbour, where we took some photos of a small mermaid on a rock (Den Lille Havfrue)…

We then walked back and enjoyed a traditional Danish hotdog (with pølse: local sausage) in Churchillparken. Surrounded by ducks, crows and mute swans, we really enjoyed the quiet atmosphere here. Too quiet for Túrin though…

We strolled around Churchillparken and headed to Kongens Have, a beautiful park around Rosenborg Slot. Great place to go running with your dog…

Our final stop was the inevitable, cosy harbour of Nyhavn.

On our way back with the car, we also passed the Rådhuspladsen with the beautiful city hall and the amusement park Tivoli, which, judging from the huge crowd, seemed to have its official opening tonight.

We definitely have to come back here for a more thorough visit, but we already enjoyed the parts we saw today. Nice capital they have here!
